Mindful Eating Quiz


Answer these 32 questions to see if you have a white
belt, yellow belt, green belt or black belt in “Food Fu”.

 

When emotions arise or when I’m under stress, I usually vent my energy in ways other than eating (yoga, exercise, talking with a spouse or friend).



When I have a craving for certain foods, I occasionally indulge without feelings of guilt or shame.



A trip to the grocery store usually doesn’t trigger binge eating or compulsive purchasing in me.



I give myself some time after eating before jumping right back into work or other activities.



I have not gained weight (or have not had my weight “yo-yo”) because of over-eating or dieting in the last 1-2 years.



I may indulge in sweets, coffee or alcohol occasionally, but do not have addictive behavior associated with these.



I generally think of the food in front of me as a “mutual friend”.



I know the difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger.



In general, I sit down to eat meals (even when snacking) rather than eating while standing, driving or sitting at my work desk.



I have a general rule not to eat while watching TV or home movies.



When at parties or family events, I can usually eat what I want, without over eating.



I leave space between every few bites to consciously take a breath.



I know when I am physically hungry, slightly hungry or full.



I usually stop eating when I am full and satisfied.



I am usually aware of any feelings or emotions before, during and after eating.



I enjoy the subtle flavors and textures of food, and pace myself enough so I can savor each bite.



My dinner table is generally clean and free of clutter.



I consciously try to chew my food slowly to aid digestion and savor my food.



I try to think positively while eating, and set aside negative thinking, planning or scheming.



I tend not to associate food and eating with my emotional difficulties or past traumas.



I have plenty of other things to do besides eating when I’m bored or lonely.



I rarely count calories or go on diets.



I generally can control myself when cookies, candy and other treats are left out in the break room at work.



Most of the time, I can eat a meal without thinking about what’s for dessert.



I like beauty around me while eating and go the extra mile to purchase flowers, candles or special place settings for my table.



I make a point to “come back” to the process of eating if I’ve found myself drifting into thoughts or daydreams while eating.



I sometimes call to mind everyone that is involved with the food I eat (growers, producers, drivers, retailers, chefs, animals) and how my choices affect the environment.



I pay attention to my posture while eating.



I tend to ask my body what it wants when I’m hungry, rather than forcing a prescribed way of eating onto it.



I think of eating as an awareness practice, like yoga or meditation.



I do not tout my eating practices as the appropriate solution for everyone, and try not to judge others by how and what they eat.



I am aware that my food choices affect my health, and generally choose foods that support my wellbeing.
